Water Sanitation and Hygiene(WASH)

“Water is Life”

The “Water is Life” project is initiated in response to critical water quality issues observed in Limbe Urban Space, Cameroon. Despite the Cameroon Government efforts and that of National Non- Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in tackling WASH related issues locally, recent demographic shifts, including the influx of Internally Displace persons (IDPs) and increased population reliance on borehole water sources, have exacerbated water scarcity and contamination problems, these issues have led to a rise in waterborne diseases and infections among the local population rendering them highly Vulnearable.

HSFAN’S Response

Hope Spring for All Nation is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of communities in limbe urban space.  HSFAN assessments examines the borehole water quality and its impacts on the health of the population within the five most vulnerable communities in limbe urban space and develop recommendations for improving water quality and public health awareness. We work with the local communities through a variety of activities.

HSFAN strongly believes that, “Access to clean water is a fundamental human right and the key to a sustainable future, as enshrine in SDG 6”. The “Water is Life” project is more than just a project. It’s a promise to bring health, hope and dignity to communities in need.

HSFAN’s “Water is Life” project aimed to tackle water quality due to its scarcity and over population in five communities: Isokolo-Kie village, Wovia community, Man O War Bay Camp, Bonadikombo community, and Upper Motowoh community. Through direct distribution of WASH kits, the project positively impacted 108 individuals (30 in Upper Motowoh, 25 in Wovia, 28 in Bonadikombo, 24 in Man O War Bay, and 2 in Isokolo-Kie village). These kits included essential supplies like buckets, bleach, and AQUA taps, offering a practical solution to hygiene and water storage challenges. The assessment project’s reach extended beyond the direct recipients, with an estimated 58 people in their households likely benefiting indirectly. It’s reasonable to assume that those receiving WASH kits directly improved their ability to collect, store, and treat water for personal hygiene and consumption.  Furthermore, considering a total target population of 200, the project achieved a significant impact, directly reaching 54.00% of the communities. This demonstrates a successful effort in addressing/assessing water quality within a targeted population.

Assessing Risks

The emphasis is to investigate the quality of the borehole water, analyzing parameters such as PH, and presence of contaminants and its impacts on the health, which included assessing the prevalence of water borne diseases such as typhoid, cholera and intestinal infections, as well as body itches.

The assessment laid emphasis on the collection of 3 water sample each from identified borehole located across the five (5) selected communities.

Implementing Solutions

HSFAN implemented a variety of solutions to mitigate the negative impacts of borehole water on the health of local communities. This included the sensitization of community members/ participants on water issues, sanitation and hygiene measures, usage of Aqua tabs, Bleach, sand filtration, Moringa and the distribution of WASH kits to the 5 communities. Ensuring that every participant goes home with at least 5 sachets of AQUA taps to help mitigate any effect of any bad water quality on their health.

Engaging local communities

HSFAN carries out a survey with the local residents to gather feedback on water usage and perceived quality. We are commented in working with members of the local communities of all age groups, from the youngest to the oldest to assess their knowledge about the impacts of borehole water on their health and to equally train them on different methods of water purification.

Influencing policy

HSFAN works with government authorities and other stakeholders to highlights the impacts of water-borne diseases on the health of the local population. The provision of wash kits and to ensure that water-health related risks is included in key policy discussion platforms.
